![]() Soon after the First World War, these four organisations quickly acknowledged that if any real progress was to be made to improve the basic needs of the many thousands of disabled ex-Servicemen who returned after the war, they stood a greater chance as one combined force. The Royal British Legion came into being in July 1921 as a result of the amalgamation of the four great ex-Service organisations. Their support services are available to the entire Armed Forces community from service personnel and veterans to military spouses and children. Also here.įormed in 1921 to safeguard the interests of wives, widows and children of men who served in the Great War, we continue today to support those in need through educational sponsorship and annuities, family welfare breaks and direct grants. The Foundation was delighted that HRH indicated that she would be honoured to assume this role and, in the summer of 2006, the Regiment hosted HRH Countess of Wessex at Canmore, Alberta where she was presented with a Regimental pin in appreciation. In 2005 the Regimental Foundation approached the Royal Household requesting that consideration be made for Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Wessex to accept this appointment. As part of the Centennial of the Regiment in 2005, a decision was made to initiate a request to the Royal Family regarding the appointment of a Colonel-in-Chief for the Regiment. ![]() In 2005, The Countess of Wessex becomes Colonel In Chief of the South Alberta Light Horse. From this point until the mid-1950s the regiment’s history can be described as a series of complicated amalgamations and redesignations of Alberta army reserve units of all arms until the regiment as it is now was formed in Calgary in 1954. The 15th Light Horse, the official direct ancestor of the SALH, was raised in Calgary on July 3, 1905. This irregular cavalry unit is seen as the true genesis of the regiment.
